No Victorian veranda or garden
was complete without its patio furniture, lawn settee, or
outdoor bench. These
seating arrangements would be attractive and comfortable,
adding to the coziness of an "indoor living-room" to the
charms of the outdoor atmosphere. Below are examples of
19th century settees and chairs available to the discerning
Victorian. Maybe they are not as comfortable as today's
outdoor patio furniture and garden furniture -- lounge chairs, lawn chairs and
hammocks -- but they are very elegant. |

TRICLININIUM, 1870s
At first glance, the outdoor
chairs in the above illustration seem to be carelessly
placed around a small center table, yet on close examination
it is seen that they are all securely fastened to the
pedestal of the table, and are all joined together to form
one piece of furniture. |

WROUGHT-IRON CHAIR, 1850s
This garden chair is lighter
than cast-iron and is much more easily moved from place to
place. It is adapted to be fixed under the shade of a tree,
or divided into four compartments. |
