Floorcloths, or oilcloths, are hand-painted canvas rugs. These floorcloths, from a late 1800s catalog, were available in different widths from one to two yards wide. A variety of patterns and designs could be purchased, including geometric patterns and floral designs. Floorcloths made especially for the backstairs of a home had a border design along the edge. Painted canvas floorcloths were an inexpensive alternative to carpet and rugs for the home. They were available for 11 cents to 35 cents per yard depending on the width and pattern. Use these antique floorcloths patterns to create your own floorcovering for a period home.
