Floorcloths, or oilcloths, are hand-painted canvas rugs. In the late 1800s, they could be purchased in different widths from one to two yards wide and came in a variety of patterns. Backstairs floorcloths had a border design along the edge. Canvas floorcloths were an inexpensive alternative to carpet and rugs for the Victorian home.
