Decorating your home can be done on a shoestring especially if you choose the right theme and know how to make decorative pillows. For example, if you love the feel of a coastal or beach home you may want to try to bring that seaside or nautical feel to your home whether or not you live in a coastal area. Not only are there are a wide variety of nautical theme color combinations to choose from – blue/tan/white or navy/red/white – but many nautical decorating accessories can be gathered up for free at the beach, such as seashells, corals, driftwood and sand. Nautical décor accent pillows can also be an important component of creating a coastal living theme. A room’s décor can be reinvented with the simple addition of a grouping of decorative throw pillows with one or two accent pillows to highlight nautical theme décor.
So how does one accomplish nautical décor on a budget? Coastal living décor provides a breezy, calm feel that can be incorporated into practically any home and don't worry it doesn't have to be expensive. Spend time, but very little outlay, on creating your own accent pillows with a beach house feel from leftover fabric, old buttons, needlework kits and free designs. Vintage quilts in rough and worn condition can also be recycled into beautifully crafted throw pillows that preserve the labor and effort of the original quilter and feature a variety of colors that are sure to coordinate with a coastal living theme room. This makes nautical decorating the practical way to turn your home into a more inviting, relaxing and comfortable space that will be the envy of any guest who visits your home.

Vintage New York Accent Pillow
This vintage nautical décor pillow design consists of the New York coat-of-arms in the center shield, with the name of the state and the date underneath. This is surrounded with a wreath of yellow wild roses and the hop vine. The wild rose is the New York state flower and New York, in the early 20th century, led in the production of hops, used primarily as a flavoring and stability agent in beer. The border of the accent pillow is patriotic in character, having the United States coat of arms in each corner, connected by garlands of stars, one for each state (in 1902 there were only 45 in number). The pillow design is drawn on blue linen and embroidered in the following manner: The shield in the center should be given first attention. Outline the sky with yellow silk. The sun on the pillow is padded or raised with cotton and covered in Satin stitch with yellow and the rays are outlined with black. The ranges of hills over which the sun is peeking are worked in Satin stitch with two shades of green. The water is worked in Outline stitch with delicate shades of Green; the boats are worked in Black and the sails in White. The roses are worked in Long and Short stitch with a double thread of Yellow Silk, with the dot in the center worked in Satin stitch with Green. The dots about the center are worked in French knots of one strand of Yellow and Brown threaded together. In the leaves, use Green. This completes the center design. Now work the scrolls and stars solid in Satin stitch with Yellow, and outline the edge and put in lettering with Black. The outlines of the shields are also worked in Black. The eagle feathers are outlined with Brown. Work the eye with Black, the ring around the eye with White. The shield on the eagle is worked in Satin stitch, Blue for the top, and the bands below in alternating rows of Red and White. Outline leaves of the olive branch in Green and work berries in French knots with Yellow. The arrows are outlined with Brown, tipped with Black. This completes the top. The ruffle is of the same material and finished with a scalloped edge worked in Buttonhole stitch with Yellow.
