Twelfth Night and the Twelve Days of Christmas

Contrary to popular belief, Christmas was not the first day of the Christmas, but was considered the twelve days after Christmas. Like the popular song, the "Twelve Days of Christmas" are the twelve days beginning on Christmas night, December 25th, and ending on Epiphany, January 6.

Twelfth Night is the vigil or eve of Epiphany. It is so called because it is the 12th night from Christmas. In England, the Twelfth Night was a great holiday and festival marking the end of the Christmas season. Fancy dress balls were a typical entertainment.
