2 squares chocolate
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon melted shortening
1 teaspoon soda
1 cup milk
1-1/2 cups bread flour
1 teaspoonful vanilla
1/3 teaspoonful salt
Dissolve the soda in a half cup of milk. Grate the chocolate and melt it in the remainder of the milk. Mix together the sugar and shortening, add vanilla, salt, the soda dissolved in the milk, and the flour; beat thoroughly. Then beat in the milk, still hot, in which the chocolate has been melted. Bake this eggless cake recipe in a loaf pan about fifty minutes in a moderate oven. This eggless cake will keep moist for several days.

Ingredients for Eggless Cake
2 cups light brown sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sour milk
2 cups pastry flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup raisins or chopped dates
1 cup walnut or pecan meats

Cream the shortening and the sugar. Sift the salt, baking powder and soda with the flour. Chop 1 pound raisins, 1 lb. currants, washed and dried, 1 lb. citron, chopped fine, 1 cup strong coffee; 1 cup butter, 1 cup brown sugar, 1 cup brandy, 1 cup molasses, 1 tablespoon each of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice; flour enough to make a very thick batter, with 1 teaspoon baking powder added to the flour before mixing.
