This is a rare antique French mid- 19th century lady's carriage (folding) parasol with an ivory silk grosgrain
cover and matching silk fringe and tassel. The bowl of the parasol tilts and the handle is
hand carved ivory in a snake and leaf design. The brass runner is stamped
"CAZAL...PARIS...27
BOULEVART DES ITALIENS."
M. Cazal was a famous French manufacturer who exhibited at the Great Exhibition and
created the parasols for the Empress Eugenie. Cazal patented a spring for parasols in France
in 1839, these are found in most Cazal parasols. Cazal also wrote a book titled: "Umbrellas,
Parasols and Walkingsticks" in 1844.
