Lois
Allen Charles, an artist with a love of Americana, paints original
acrylic paintings on canvas and paper. The
artist portrays herself as Ladyartbasket, a lady who
has raised three children, thinking that the wash would
never be done; you will find a figure carrying around this
wash in her basket in all of her Olde City paintings.
Lois has many warm childhood memories “at the seashore” while
staying in old Victorian houses vacationing with her family
which has inspired her love of painting these period scenes.
Moreover, her Olde City paintings are a combination
of memories of visiting her grandparents in the city and
working in Philadelphia in her youth with her study of old
photographs. This interest developed into paintings that are
filled with circa 1900 street life and include a depiction
of Americana detailed down to the last brick and
cobblestone, including everyday people, horse and buggies,
and tiny street signs -- the look of years gone-by.
Furthermore, the
artist's love of hand-quilting has also inspired her
to painted quilt designs on canvas. Other works by Lois
include a series of The Heavenly Angels, The Bear Family,
Children at the Beach, and Valley Forge Revolutionary --
all created in her unique folk art style. Lois' artwork
has been included in numerous exhibitions and can be found
in many private and public collections.
Lois
Allen Charles shares her love of the past in her line of unique Victorian greeting cards.
There are eleven cards in the Victorian series, each made
from original paintings with fine miniaturized detail. These
exceptional handmade cards have a raised design with a blank
inside and feature various scenes of Victorian houses. You
will find a lady with a parasol and a Victorian gentleman on
a high wheeler bicycle incorporated within some
illustrations. In addition, you will discover miniature
candles peaking out of lace-curtained windows, hollyhocks
and foxgloves in colorful gardens, antique street lamps,
British and American flags, a Victorian lady walking a dog,
and a child enjoying an ice cream cone. |
