Victorian Turkish Baths
In 1856, the first modern
Turkish bath was opened in Britain in Britain at St Ann's
Hydropathic Establishment near Blarney, County Cork, Ireland. A
Turkish bath provided a steam bath followed by a shower and
massage. The next year, the first Turkish bath to be built in
England since Roman times was opened in Manchester. The popularity
of Turkish baths spread; during the following 150 years, over six
hundred baths opened in Britain.
