The Victorians designed
creative and space saving antique furniture storage solutions,
such as the Murphy bed. Another clever idea is this
multipurpose piece of antique furniture. Shown is a
"Combination Bedroom Suite of Furniture" from an
1890s magazine. It was said that "even in a very small room this will not be found
inconvenient." The cabinet, when closed,
occupies the space of twenty inches from the wall and is 3 feet 7
inches wide. When using the washstand, the long
door on the left-hand side is opened, and the flap, which is
part of the door panel, is let down; the towel rail is then brought
round, and forms a support for the flap. When using it as a dressing table, the
door of the center cupboard at the top is let down; and with a
mirror inside, and a shaped piece of wood
outside, to keep it at a slight angle, it forms a handy toilet
mirror.
