Bathroom Remodeling Floor Plans

Bathroom Floor PlanThere are several ways to plan for a successful bathroom remodeling. An old favorite way to draw up bathroom floor plans was to make cut-outs of brown paper or newspaper exactly the size of the fixtures you plan to use in the bath remodel. Then arrange the cut-outs on the floor of the space you will remodel for the bathroom. Another way is to draw a bathroom floor plan to scale on graph paper. Let ½ inch equal 1 foot of the available bathroom design space. Make cut-outs of fixtures drawn to the same scale. Draw lines in this bathroom plan to show the location of windows and doors.

Don't worry if the finished bath design appears small; remember that the latest bathroom tiles design can make a room appear larger. Then arrange the cut-outs on the floor plan. Be sure to allow for enough space between bathroom fixtures to clean easily. Plan the plumbing so pipes can be put into walls and under the floor where they are hidden from sight. If vertical pipes cannot be placed in the walls, box them in. Plumbing fixtures are heavy; make sure the floor joists are large enough to hold the fixtures. In an old house remodeling, have an experienced builder check the floors before beginning the bath remodeling. They may need more or larger joists.

The next step is to choose the best location in your house to add an extra bathroom. You can save significantly in the cost of adding a bathroom by locating it next to or above the kitchen or washroom where there is other plumbing especially if just small bathroom floor plans. Be sure to create bathroom floor plans that have at least the suggested minimum space between fixtures and in front of them. Be sure that the fixtures will not keep the door from opening full width. Also, is there enough towel rod space for your family needs?

Plan for storage space for all the supplies and accessories you would like to keep in the new bathroom design. In addition, it is best to have the bathroom lighting arranged to shine on the face of the person using the mirror. There should be a window or a good ventilation ceiling fan in the bathroom floor plan. Have you planned for safety in your new bathroom remodel? Factor in that the floors should not be slippery when wet and choose an appropriate flooring. The bathtub should have a flat bottom, and consider grab bars at the tub and shower. The light wall switches should be out of reach of anyone in the bathtub or using a water faucet. A safety concern is to have the medicine cabinet out of the children’s reach and using a lock.

Toilet and Bath Floor Plan

The kind of fixtures you buy for a bath remodeling will depend on how much you have to spend, and on how large a room you are planning to remodel. Cost of bathroom fixtures varies with size, style, fittings, and materials used. Regarding bathroom layouts, be sure to allow at least one and half feet between the front of the sink and the front of the toilet. There should be two feet between the front of any fixture and the wall across from it. Minimum bathroom floor area needed for a person cleaning the tub is 30 inches (along the side of the tub) by 20 inches.

At the side of the fixtures allow at least two inches between toilet tank and sink or vanity and three inches between toilet and bathtub and four inches between toilet and the wall at the side of it. The best bathroom floor plans will locate the toilet so the large waste pipe goes between and parallel to the floor joists rather than cutting through them. This saves cutting the joists and may save costly floor framing. You can also save on the cost of piping by placing all the fixtures along one wall in new bath remodel. It is best to allow six inches between sink vanity and the wall. Allow more than the minimum of space if you can. Leave room for storage cabinets and towel bars. Rearrange your design until you have the fixtures in the best possible layout.

Tubs in Bathroom Remodel Floor Plans

When visualizing bathroom floor plans, the bath tub becomes the most noticeable feature and should be considered first. Position the fixture end of a recessed or built-in bathtub on the inside wall. You can then have a removable panel in the wall so you can easily repair pipes. Standard size bath tubs for a bathroom remodel vary in dimensions and placement options. Built-in tubs without a wide rim are usually 30 inches wide, while with a wide rim they are 36 inches in width.

The length is 5 to 6 feet and fit into less space than a tub on legs or a freestanding tub. Moreover, there are no exposed pipes. Built-in corner tubs many be 4-1/2 to 5 feet long and 30 inches wide. Some built-in tubs have no outside apron and can be enclosed with tile, paneling, or other water-resistant material. Freestanding tubs or tubs with legs may be as narrow as 26 inches but more often these tubs are over-sized and require a larger bathroom space in bathroom remodeling than the standard bath tub choices. These freestanding bath tubs cost much more than standard models, they are difficult to step into because of the height from floor, and are hard to clean around – both underneath the tub and around the pipes. Square built-in tubs may be 42 to 51 inches square making the back of the tub hard to reach for cleaning. Remember, the larger the bath tub, the more water needed.

Sinks in Bathroom Floor Plans

Regardless of the type of vanity or sink you choose for your bath remodeling plan, it is important to have it at a height that is right for most members of your family. You can place a wall hung sink at whatever height is best. A wall hung sink can also fit into a corner for use under special conditions, such as when space on your bathroom floor plan is limited. A sink with fixed legs or on a pedestal is usually 31 inches high. Sinks with adjustable legs can be set at any height up to 36 inches, which is a more comfortable height for the average person. A sink on a cabinet base provides storage space in your bath remodel and is a good choice for a small bathroom. Standard sizes are 24 by 18 inches or 24 by 20 inches. You can adjust the height of a ready-made cabinet under the sink by building up the toe space. For small children, you should plan to provide a movable step stool. Custom vanity cabinetry can be built any length desired with a specially designed counter top with recessed sinks.
